Why the two ratios exist
1:1 (thin) syrup approximates natural nectar. Fed in spring, it convinces the colony a nectar flow is on: the queen lays more, and wax builders draw foundation into comb. Every new package and most nucs should be fed 1:1 until their brood boxes are fully drawn.
2:1 (thick) syrup is winter fuel. Bees must evaporate syrup down to about 18% moisture before capping it, and thick syrup needs far less work — critical in fall when cool nights limit evaporation time. Feed 2:1 from late August (North) through October (South) until the hive reaches its target weight — the Winter Stores Checker tells you what that target is for your region.
Feeding without starting a robbing frenzy
- Use a top feeder or in-hive frame feeder during dearth — entrance feeders advertise free food to every colony in flying range. (Which feeder for which season: hive feeder picks.)
- Never spill syrup near the hive; drips trigger robbing within minutes in late summer.
- Reduce entrances on weak colonies while feeding.
- Remove feeders during a strong natural flow — syrup stored in supers is not honey and should never be harvested as such.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 1:1 and 2:1 ratio by weight or by volume?
By weight, which is the standard among US beekeepers: 1:1 means equal pounds of sugar and water (1 gallon of water weighs 8.34 lbs). Measuring by volume gets you close — a quart of granulated sugar weighs about 1.9 lbs vs 2.09 lbs for a quart of water — but weight is the reliable way to hit the ratio, and this calculator uses it.
When do I feed 1:1 vs 2:1 syrup?
Feed thin 1:1 syrup in spring to new packages and light colonies — it mimics nectar flow and stimulates comb building and brood rearing. Feed thick 2:1 syrup in late summer and fall so bees can quickly cure and cap it as winter stores. Once daytime temperatures stay below roughly 50°F, bees stop taking syrup — switch to fondant or dry sugar (see the winter feeding guide).
Do I need to boil the syrup?
No, and you should not boil it — overheated sugar syrup can produce HMF (hydroxymethylfurfural), which is harmful to bees. Heat the water until hot (not boiling), remove from heat, then stir in the sugar until fully dissolved. For 2:1 you will need genuinely hot water and patience.
How much syrup does a new package need?
A new 3-lb package drawing comb on foundation can take 1–2 gallons of 1:1 per week for its first 4–8 weeks. Many first-year colonies consume 25–50 lbs of sugar in total. Keep feeding as long as they take it and the comb is not fully drawn.
Can I use organic, raw, or brown sugar?
Use plain white granulated cane or beet sugar only. Brown sugar, molasses, and raw sugars contain solids that give bees dysentery. Never feed honey from an unknown source — it can carry American foulbrood spores.
