8-Frame vs 10-Frame Hives: Weight, Cost, and Compatibility

The weight math over a season

Weight is not a one-time event. A normal inspection means lifting every super off the stack and back on; a mite treatment or a queen search can mean moving 150+ lbs of boxes per hive, twice; harvest means carrying full supers across the yard. Where 10-frame keeps the edge

  • Nucs and bees: nucs come on deep frames, which fit both — but a 10-frame deep absorbs a 5-frame nuc plus five empties with room to grow before the next box is needed.
  • Mentors and used gear: most club mentors run 10-frame; craigslist woodenware is overwhelmingly 10-frame (inspect used gear carefully — foulbrood history matters more than price).
  • Honey per lift of the roof: fewer, bigger boxes means fewer boxes to remove per inspection, even if each is heavier.
  • Kit economics: starter kits and woodenware bundles are priced sharpest in 10-frame.

Run the default unless you have a reason: 10-frame if lifting 85 lbs occasionally is acceptable and you want the deepest equipment ecosystem. Switch the plan to 8-frame the moment lifting is a real constraint — it is the difference between beekeeping being sustainable for decades or ending with one bad lift.
